The modules that make up the Year One course are grouped into five areas:
Safe and Self Practice:
Content includes: developing your ability to reflect on and learn from your practice, code of ethics, supervision, risk management and first aid. A background to the Treaty of Waitangi, and discussion of it’s relevance to youth work. Basic greetings in te reo Maori and marae protocol.
Mission Practice:
Content includes: An introduction to Biblical and contemporary approaches to mission society. Communication practice and theory. Working with people of different cultures.
Spiritual Formation:
Content includes; reflection on and development of your own faith and experience of God through an examination of six traditions of Christian spirituality. Developing your self awareness, working as part of a team, and an approach to personal discipleship based on the AA 12 Step programme. An introduction to the New Testament.
Youth and Community Work Practice:
Content includes; researching youth needs in your own community, models of youth development, connecting with young people, meeting needs and developing your own practice as a youth worker in the context of your community and agency.
This module includes a 50 credit fieldwork practice component that is assessed by your agency.
Practice skills:
Content includes: group facilitation, human development, listening skills, crisis intervention, and mentoring.Other specialist skill modules may be offered as part of your class.
