Certificate Course and 1st Year Diploma Course

Local Programme

If you live in (or shift to) Christchurch or Wellington,

If you are accessing the course at one of these places you will have one - two days of classes per week. Your practical work with your agency will take place outside of these days (which is normally at least two more days per week). If you plan to shift to one of these cities for the year, and would like help to find an agency, you should discuss this with us as soon as possible. There are three blocks during the year where you will attend a week long residential National workshop.

Regional Programme

If you live any where else in the country –or work on a campsite

Programme content is delivered at 5 block courses throughout the year, three of 12 days each and two of 8 days each. You will also meet with a tutor in your region for up to half a day per week in between block courses.

Most of your lectures will be offered through these block courses, and you will be given assignment work to take home after each one. Outside of block courses, you are expected to work with your agency for at least 3 days per week.

Your block courses will be in different locations around NZ and you will have the option of doing one of them in Melbourne. Your travel to and accommodation in Wellington are usually at your own cost.

We strongly recommend that all Regional students have regular access to a computer with email and internet.

Tipu Ake

If you live anywhere in the country and work with youth within a Maori context.

Tipu Ake originated from a partnership between Te Ora Hou Aotearoa and Praxis. The course is run as a regional programme. It incorporates the main elements of the Praxis course as well as content specific to working with youth in a Maori context. If you choose to complete the courses as a part of Tipu Ake you will complete the same qualifications but some of the unit standards you complete will be slightly different and have the focus of working in a Maori context, including basic tikanga and Maori spirituality within a Christian context.

Programme content is delivered at 5 block courses throughout the year, three of which are 12 days and two of 8 days in duration. After each block course, students will be given assignments to take home and complete. Outside of block courses, you are expected to work with your agency for at least 3 days per week. Many of your block courses will be with other Praxis students, and at least one will be just for Tipu Ake students.

Where block courses are held as noho marae, your food and accommodation are covered in your fees. We can help you find accommodation during the non-marae stay courses if you need it (let us know in plenty of time). Your travel to all block courses and accommodation during the non-marae based blocks is at your own cost. Many agencies support with travel costs and you should negotiate this before you begin the course.
