Alt School Internship

Internship Information 2021

What is the Alt internship?

An opportunity to gain practical experience as a member of an Alt Education team as you study towards a qualification in youth work.

What would I do?

We would ask you to commit to working of up to 12 hours (paid) part time work per week at an Alt Ed programme in either Porirua or Wellington. Any work beyond this would be in a voluntary capacity.

You would be supporting students with their academic learning through one to one and small group work.

You would be helping out with group activities for two afternoons each week.

If you have a skill or interest (eg. art, music, a sport, te reo, cooking, photography etc.) we will encourage you to develop it over your year at Alt and take some of the young people on a journey of learning about it with you.

We would ask you to be involved in team meetings and training events for the Alt teams in a voluntary capacity (this is not part of your paid hours).

What would I get out of it?

Gain valuable experience as you contribute to the lives of young people and support them to re-engage with learning.

We will provide extra training -this will give you the opportunity to gain credits and experience in teaching and assessment of unit standards (on top of your learning with the Praxis course).

You get to take part in some cool experiences with the wider Praxis team.

How to apply:

Internship applications for the following year should be submitted by the end of October. We will meet in early November to interview and select  applicants. You should know about your application by mid-November. Applications will only remain open after this date if there are still places available.

If you plan to apply please register your interest with as soon as you are able.

We will generally arrange for you to go and spend some time at one of the Alt programmes before your interview.

The details

We will pay you for 12 hours per week at the Living Wage (currently $22.10 per hour). The role is for one year, it will start at the Praxis team retreat towards the end of January, and finish on the last day of term (December). You will be paid during the school holidays, but are also expected to work one week of the holidays.

We will make a contribution of $600 towards your travel costs of getting to the Praxis course block courses.
